Frequently Asked Questions
What is it the Dolphin Swim Team?
Since 1977, the Round Rock Dolphin Swim Team has offered recreational summer-league swimming in the Round Rock area for swimmers ranging from 4 to 17 years of age. The Dolphins have been training and competing in the northwest Austin area as a part of the Northwest Swim Circuit (NWSC) for over 40 years. We will be swimming at the Micki Krebsbach Memorial pool and anticipate having over 275 swimmers this year.
What swimming ability is required to join?
For swimmers 6 and under:
Some swimming ability is required. Your children do not have to be ready to swim in the Olympics this summer to be a member of the team, but it is important to understand, before becoming a member of the team, that this is NOT a "learn to swim" program and so swimmers should be comfortable in the water without parental assistance and they should be comfortable putting their face in the water. If you don't feel that your child meets this description, then there is still time to get them ready before practice begins.
For our swimmers between 7 and 12:
A swimmer must be able to swim one length of freestyle (25 yards) in order to be on the team.
For our swimmers who are 13 and up:
A swimmer must be able to swim one 50-yard freestyle in order to be on the team.
How often do the kids practice?
Practices are on weekdays April 29 through June 30.
During School (Mon - Fri)
8 yrs and under 4:30-5:15 pm
9-12 yrs 5:15-6:00 pm
13-17 yrs 6-7pm
During summer: (generally Mon - Fri)
13+ 7-8 am
12 and under picked either 8-9 or 9-10 am.
*6 and under will likely swim for 45 or 50 minutes, not the full hour
Do swimmers have to be at all practices?
Swimmers must come to practice with a suit, goggles (in good working order), and a towel. Swimmers are asked to attend all training sessions, but it is understood that there will be absences from time to time. With that said, swimming is like life. The more you put into it the more you get out of it.
Our practice or training program is designed to acquaint and teach young swimmers the strokes and training involved in today's competitive swimming. Emphasis is placed on learning the proper stroke, start and turn techniques, and "personal best" improvement. Swimmers are introduced to competition through weekly swim meets.
How long is the season?
Practice begins on April 29 and the season ends on June 30. The meets begin in mid May and run through June 30.
What’s a ‘swim meet’ and when/where are they?
On most Saturdays, the Round Rock Dolphins compete in swim meets (dual meets) with one of the other teams in the NWSC. The overriding focus during the meets is sportsmanship and for swimmers to achieve their personal best times. Please see our schedule at https://rrdolphins.swimtopia.com/swim_meets for all of our meet and event locations.
